Note-taking that is still useful three months later

The test of a set of notes is not how complete they are. It is whether, three months later, they let you reconstruct an argument you have half forgotten. Most student notes fail that test because they were written as transcription rather than as a record of understanding.

Stop transcribing

Writing down what the lecturer said, as they say it, uses all your attention on capture and none on comprehension. It also produces a document that is no better than the slides, which you already have. Listening for a minute and then writing one sentence in your own words is slower, harder and far more useful.

Leave room for the second pass

Whatever format you use, leave space to add to it. The most valuable material in a set of notes is usually added afterwards: the connection to another module, the example that made it click, the question you could not answer. Notes that fill the page in the lecture have nowhere for any of that to go.

• Write the lecture's central question at the top before it starts
• Capture claims and their evidence, not every sentence
• Mark anything you did not follow rather than writing it down verbatim
• Spend ten minutes afterwards summarising the lecture in three sentences
• Link each lecture to the assignment it will eventually feed

Notes from reading are different

For journal articles, record the claim, the method, the finding and your own reaction, in four lines. Add the full citation immediately. The reaction line is the one people skip and the one that turns a stack of summaries into a literature review months later.
